obligatory lcd recap

If you’d asked me, around dinnertime yesterday, “Do you know any members of the storied early-80s funk band Liquid Liquid?,” I would have said no, I do not, though I do think they’re great.

Then last night I went to see the first of LCD Soundsystem’s farewell shows, at Terminal 5, and Liquid Liquid came out to open, and I was like … wait, is that Sal from the dog run?

This week contains a whole lot of recaps and appreciations of LCD Soundsystem’s career — I’ve got one up on Vulture right now. Putting it together reminded me of something: One of the first bits of substantive music writing I did, back in 2002, was a Pitchfork feature about the first four DFA singles, including “Losing My Edge / Beat Connection.” Someone gave it a title with the word “electroclash” in it, because I was always writing about electro, and then for a year there were weirdos who made fun of me, like “that’s that idiot who thinks the DFA stuff is electroclash.” I think it’s completely vanished and inaccessible now, or at least would take longer to find than I’d ever want to put into it, which is too bad; I’d have liked to compare notes between what I thought of a band when they started and what I thought when they ended.
