“Mi Pueblo,” by Illfluent
I’ve spent a good chunk of the past couple weeks talking and writing about people’s backgrounds, and how they can be a lot more complex, strange, or funny than we like to admit.
My personal background isn’t all that complex, I don’t think — it falls in the defined category of Pleasantly Middle-Class / Immigrant-Professional Parents — but I did wind up talking to one person about how I grew up in a town that was about 50% Chicano, and full of culture I never really see anymore, which fact is occasionally surprising to people, apparently.
Which conversation somehow led me into a whole YouTube investigation of rappers from my hometown of Pueblo, Colorado. Specifically, rappers from the East Side of Pueblo. And then eventually to this video, which is … totally Pueblo! There are rhymes about dropping out of the high school I went to.
Another Pueblo rapper had a mean YouTube comment telling him to stop acting hard because he’s from the suburbs and should go back to snowboarding, which is funny because (a) hahaha right snowboarding, plus (b) whoever posted it was from Santa Ana.
Anyway, if you’re not from a big city but think there are probably rappers from your town, I highly encourage you to poke around YouTube and see!

youtube.com/watch?v… - this not amazing except that it’s from NAVAN, which now means that Navan has a tiny hiphop tradition or something.
